When walking into Yamato I was very hopefull we didn't have reservations and sat in a very well kept sushi bar. The fish was fresh the service was on point and the music was comfortable for a weekend dinner with family. We were sat before receiving our fish but the waiter brought it to our table (very helpfull with the transition), but our waitress was sub-par. I understand having to work on a bad day but she wasn't there in the head. We sat in the small dinning room and waited too long for everything while we watched her start yelling at the bussboys about something or another. What saves the hibachi is the fact that it was well cooked well portion and came with a great show. I'll be a repeat customer as long as I don't get the angry slouching girl again.

I go to this restaurant quite regularly so I feel pretty confident about giving an honest review based on more than just one visit. Overall I'd give it a very very good. It's a great place to eat. Here a few key points and some hints: 1.) Great friendly staff: Hostesses, chefs, servers, & bartenders are all very friendly and really do a great job of making sure you get what you want when you want it. The only negative is that there seems to be a high turnover among the servers. I guess this is pretty typical for the food service industry though. The service is usually very quick. 2.) Hibachi food is great (except at the bar - see below). I always find it cooked properly and the way I like it. It always seems fresh. And best of all you get a lot of it - portions are excellent. There sushi is also very good. Oh, if you order wine, their "pours" are not stingy at all. The soup sometimes is hit & miss though. Sometimes it's just barely warm. If you let them know they will give you a fresh hot bowl. 3.) The atmosphere could be better, but not a huge problem. I mean the place is clean but just dated. The cook tops seem to be old and worn and appear to be hard to maintain in a spotless condition. The table tops are also very dated and need upgrading. The carpeting is definitely in need of replacing. The uniforms everyone wears could use a little updating also. 4.) You can eat hibachi at the bar or in the bar area (or even the sushi area) but I would recommend against it. The experience is not the same and the food does taste different, particularly the rice. It's like the rice is made at the beginning of the day and reheated. I've had take out before also and the same comment applies. The food served at the Hibachi tables is very fresh though. 5.) Sauces - here's where they really shine. All their sauces are fantastic and you get as much as you like. I particularly like the hot sauce which really isn't all that hot. They do have a super hot sauce you can get if you ask for it. They serve the ginger and white sauce and hot sauce at the table. If you want mustard sauce, which is also a favorite of mine, you have to ask for it. They have it in the back. Don't understand why it isn't one of the offerings at the table. I guess because they already have a great selection. 6.) The cost is good. I think you get a great value for what you get. It's not expensive at all - especially compared to other restaurants in the area. 7.) The management is good also. They are always near by directing activity as needed. If you have a problem they are easy to talk to and will make things right, as will any of the staff for that matter. 8.) They are very consistent with food and service, except what I've mentioned above. Oh, and the shrimp you order as a meal is different that the shrimp you get as an appetizer (everyone gets some appetizer shrimp no matter what you order). To me the appetizer shrimp tastes much better. 9.) The show: it's usually very good but not always consistent. Not every chef does the same thing, which I suppose is good in a way. They do add new "material" occasionally and they do take a great delight in entertaining people especially the kids, which they are very good with. Definitely a child friendly place. They are also good with small or large groups and try to cater to a groups need anyway they can. For example, if you bring in your own birthday cake to celebrate a birthday they will cut it up, plate it, and serve it. Summary: I really do love this restaurant and highly recommend it. I would have given it 5 stars but for the minor things I pointed out above. If they upgrade the interior, are a little more consistent with a couple things, and improve the rice you get when not at the hibachi table, then they would earn 5 stars from me.

Great Sushi and a great group of people.. I live close so I eat here a ton. If you stay and eat in and don't take your Sushi to go, be prepared to wash your clothes when you get home. You will smell like a grease trap. Not much they can do, but be prepared to not bring in something that is not easily washable.. i.e. Leather Coat or your Prada Handbag... LOL!! Enjoy..

I always have a good meal at Yamato. Sometimes one chef can be better than others but they do a great job at being entertaining. It's always more fun to go with a group so you can take over the whole table although you can only talk to the two people sitting next to you so I guess it doesn't matter all that much. It is your standard Japanese steakhouse so I can't give them any points for originality. You start with soup, salad, and a tiny shrimp appetizer. Then your meal includes the rice, veggies, and protein with a bowl of rainbow sherbert to finish up. My favorite thing I only found out about a couple years ago is the share charge. You can add six or seven bucks to your meal and share it with someone else. The thing is that you're only sharing the protein part i.e. filet, shrimp, chicken, etc... Both people still get the soup, salad, shrimp app, veggies, rice, and sherbert. You may not go home with a mountain of leftovers but, you'll both be plenty full for way less.

Been here 3 times... each experience was completely different. First visit... best we ever had for hibachi food and entertainment. Chefs name is Wes and he was a blast. 5 stars. Second visit. .. food was good but chef lacked any entertainment value. 3 stars Third visit. .. food was good and chef was ok. But we were a party of 4 adults and they seated a birthday party of 6 10yr old girls with us. We were dumbfounded when the mother that brought the girls did not eat or even stay at the table during dinner. Tough situation for the restaurant but they did nothing to correct the problem. 1 star Such a bummer... went from a place I raved about to most likely will not visit again...

The soup was half warm when we got it and it tasted awful. The pimp daddy roll was very good. The place itself looks dirty. And the floor had food all over it because they try to throw shrimp in your mouth but they need to sweep when the table leaves. Only two cooks in this place.... but overall the food was good!

I must say the Yamato sushi bar is my favorite place in Charleston for sushi. They have a great selection of sushi rolls to choose from, and are made to order by the sushi chefs. My favorites are the pimp daddy & spider rolls. We've enjoyed going here for almost 10 years and make it a regular dining choice.

A great place to hit up on a weeknight with a group of friends. It is pretty standard for a hamachi restaurant. I've never had a bad meal and have been several times. Typically, it isn't terribly busy so wait times aren't really a factor. Unless they only have a cook or two working (given they rotate... that can cause a bit of a wait). All in all, a fun spot to go for a great meal. And they do give you a ton of food... so likely you'll have another full meal to bring home.

I LOVE Japanese food. I've never been a fan of teppanyaki. (It's not really hibachi, look it up.) This did not change my mind. That said, what they provide is acceptable, considering that most people are going to these places for the entertainment value, not for the food. That's why I felt inclined to give a generous third star. Dinner was pretty much the same as every other teppanyaki place I've been to: overpriced, mildly amusing, with decent, yet uninspired and not particularly flavorful, food. Note: We did not have any sushi. Maybe that is where they really knock it out of the park. We did have the gyoza, soup, salad, fried rice, vegetables, shrimp, scallops, and chicken. Most were simply okay. The soup seemed like a bad joke; it was merely hot water steeped with mushrooms and a few green onions. The chicken was especially bland. The sherbet dessert was pretty good. The girlfriend had one of their special cocktails. It tasted like watery, orange-flavored vodka; half of it remained in the glass. I did appreciate the Kirin on tap. We went with a large group. So did everyone else. It was pretty loud most of the time. Every 20 minutes of so, someone would bang the gong, which meant the whole restaurant was expected to sing happy birthday, again. If you've never been to a teppanyaki-style restaurant, it's worth at least one visit. You might get a kick out of it.

Delicious place for Hibachi! I like to take advantage of the early bird special... I know I'm a rare bird. The veggies are good, the rice is good, the soup and salad are good. I'm sold! And as you would expect, I always have left overs. Yamato is our go-to hibachi destination.

Very disappointed! There was a weird smell when we walked in. The chef was very nice. The wait time was not bad at all. BUT, the salmon my daughter ordered was not cooked properly. We didn't realize it until the chef left. When I told the waitress she said she would go talk to her manager. She came back letting me know that she just took it off the bill. Which was nice but didn't offer a replacement or to even cook it longer. So my daughter didn't get to have dinner.

It has been at least 5 years since we have eaten at an establishment like this. Being Mothers Day "Mom" got to choose. I will say a good experience and plenty of food. it was fresh and well prepared. I do not eat very much sushi so I can not comment on that aspect of Japanese cuisine. I had the filet, shrimp, scallops entree and it was really good. I was a little disappointed you could not choose between fried rice or noodles. I would recommend for larger gatherings.

Shell fish allergies BEWARE...Set out for an enjoyable evening with a party of 8. On 3 different occasions, including talking to the manager, waitress, and chef, explained my wife's shellfish allergy. Although they attempted to cook her food away from everyone else's, the flat grill obviously had not been cleaned properly. Not to mention the pound of butter they use on "Grilled" fish? She only had about 5 bites because it was dripping with butter. I finished my meal and began to pay for our dinner. 10 minutes later, she couldn't breath. Used her Epi-Pin and called an ambulance. During all this, the manager brings me the receipt and said good luck. So not only does the asshole charge us both full price, showed no concern, no accident report, and doesn't ask for our number to follow up? Who could argue when we needed to get help quick- went to the hospital for the rest of the night. Wife is fine, although traumatic evening. Just can't believe how unprofessional they were for her well being. Maybe it's time for me to call a professional-$70 meal and $2000+ hospital event!

What an awful experience. First of all, the place could use a little cleaning up. The "appetizer" came after the salad was server... But before that, the soup tasted like warm dish water. The salad itself was watery. The normal house dressing was not good. Then, when the cook was preparing the veggies, my 21 year old son said he thought he saw something crawling around... An ant, perhaps... On the veggies. We sort of dismissed it, but then the veggies did not taste particularly good... Broccoli was old... And everything else was soggy. Then my youngest son, 16, found something on his plate that was either a fly or part of some other insect. After telling the manager, we promptly left. Yelp will not let me post with zero stars.

This is a fun place to eat, and the kids really enjoy it. I wish they would shut down for a week and clean it up. It smells bad (carpet in a restaurant), really? It does not feel clean. We would frequent this place if they would pay attention to cleanliness! I noticed old reviews that also spoke about cleanliness. Please get your act together!

This place was crowded on a Thursday night! Came for some sushi with my dad - there were two open tables and plenty of seats at the bar. Though we didn't make it in time, sushi rolls are 30% off between 5-6pm. Service was nice and the rolls were great! My dad pretty much always sticks to what he knows - spicy tuna rolls. I pointed out the dynamite roll (lightly fried spicy tuna) and he was in love! My personal fave here is the tako (spicy octopus) roll. Prices are average/comparable to anywhere else in town. Definitely prefer Yamato's sushi to most other places, but for hibachi there are better options as my dad says their teriyaki chicken has tasted freezer burnt on multiple occasions.

Having eaten at Yamato about 30 times over the last seven years, I can honestly say it is a true classic. Great, fresh food, reasonable pricing and great service aside from an occasional green horn server. Chefs are great as well. Bar could use some help as it really is nothing more than a staging room with some liquor. if they are serving the baked sea bass app, do not deny yourself. Also, the house cucumber roll is as fresh as it gets. A great place to knock out a lengthy hangover. The take home box is just part of the culture so make no lunch plans the next day.

I really enjoyed this place. I was looking for a fairly standard, but good, hibachi restaurant. This place was exactly what I was looking for. I ordered the hibachi chicken, which came with rice, vegetables, soup, salad, and sorbet for dessert. All of the food was great. The highlight of the evening was the hibachi chef. He was very entertaining and funny. He had the table laughing multiple times. Definitely a good hibachi place. I was very happy with everything and will go back.

This place is pretty standard Japanese Steak House. Too similar to all the others I have been to. Staff is very friendly. The Chef was the same one i belive I have had the last three times I have been to this restaurant. Although he is a good chef, the "routine" appears to be tired. Food is also A-OK.

Great food, fast service, and a very hospitable staff. When asked for recommendations, the waitress was very helpful. I enjoyed the taste of the soy vinaigrette dressing with my salad. I visited this restaurant while in Charleston for business. Would definitely return to Yamato again!

Yamato has become one of our regular places to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. The hibachi food and show are just okay on the hibachi side. Nothing spectacular, but nothing really bad either. On the Sushi side, I have never been disappointed. The fish is always fresh and served at the right temperature. Our all time favorite item on the Sushi menu is the "Pimp Daddy". It is a roll with cooked shrimp on the inside and shredded crab meat across the top. A light drizzle of a Delicious sauce and this thing is out of this world!!!

Good food and show. My little one was frightened of the fire but he chef took extra care to make sure she was comfortable. Would recommend this place to anyone and we plan on going back.

What's the goal of a hibachi joint? Is it the show? Is it the food? Perhaps some vague notion that you're experiencing how some other culture lives? Yamato scored middling on the first two, and a probable no on the third. Jose cooked for us. Jose was, as can be deduced, Mexican. Great dude. Very friendly. Maybe not what you'd expect at a Japanese grill, but maybe I'm being too close-minded. He could twirl his spatula and turning fork, flick shrimp into the air, and make an onion volcano. He didn't do so with particular panache, but everything he attempted succeeded. I ordered the vegetarian entree, but sampled around the other meats available, some sushi, and some appetizers. Mine was capably prepared, with enough crispy cooked rice bits to keep things interesting. A spicy tuna roll was neither spicy nor very tuna-like. Seaweed salad was briny and soggy. Edamame was, well, edamame. It's hard to mess up. Service was prompt. The hostess was cute. The folks next to us celebrated their birthday by gonging a gong, rubbing a Buddha belly, and being subjected to a traditional recital of the song. I left full. That was a-ok. Perhaps this will be better for someone else.

I recently ordered takeout and had a horrible experience. The food was great but what little service I received when I walked in was horrible. When I called and ordered "Chicken" I asked the hostess if this meal came with shrimp, salad, veggies, etc. She replied "no". I have an allergy to shrimp so I wanted to avoid it at all cost. When I entered the restaurant the hostess just stared at me. Then she walked away and grabbed one of the bar tenders to help her check me out. I was greeted with "What's up"....seriously! How unprofessional! Ugh. When I got home to my surprise I found SHRIMP!!! and veggies with my meal....both of which I was told did NOT come with the meal. Good thing I didn't order a side of veggies, which would have made my meal for one close to $20. The food was good but the service was very lacking. A hostess taking orders who's not knowledgable of the menu doesn't add up. "What's up" is clearly unprofessional.

This review is solely for locals because I wouldn't want a tourist hitting up Yamato's when there are better options out there for your "first impression." If you're a local - read on. The good: Two words: PIMP DADDY. It's a speciality roll. Crab. Get it The bar - nothing special but fun place to get together with your girls and waste five hours drinking Clo du bois & gossiping The sushi bar - nice, away from regular bar and hibachi The okay: The female bartender is a bit obnoxious. She always calls you 'hun.' The decor The BAD: C-A-R-P-E-T in a restaurant. Enough said. You smell like butter when you leave. (all hibachi places are like that though) They no longer serve fried doughnuts. BOO.

Hibachi was ok. Had the scallops and filet. Nothing to write home about but you know, decent and it was take out so I admittedly missed out on the fun of a chef throwing knives and landing a shrimp in a pocket. Sushi was Not Good at all. And I asked specifically what the freshest fish was and had the hostess check with the sushi chef to suggest any changes on my order citing my own admitted sushi snobbery as cause. I was told that my order would be great and everything was the highest quality. First of all they messed up my order and 2 out of the 4 roles were incorrect. Again this was take out so I did not know until it was in my mouth. The roles, were ok. Not better than grocery store quality. It's like fresh to them was getting from the bi-lo. Got pieces as well. The scallops I could smell as soon as I opened the container. The white fish - which was a snapper had no taste and was mushy. I didn't order tuna but got that anyway yet didn't get white tuna. The yellow tail was surprisingly the best piece and that is where most places lose freshness for some reason. The salmon was ok but again this is grocery quality. What's funny is the guy said to my husband when he picked it up 'if she doesn't like this then she's not going to like it anywhere' or something to that effect. So, yeah...no. I have only had sushi one place in town that I would give 4 stars to and that is Oku. They have top quality. They don't get 5 stars because it is ridiculously expensive and the pieces are small. so value there is lacking but that is typical for Charleston food prices so you gotta take it if you want to eat that way I guess.... Other places that are also much better than sushi here is Locals and Haru. Tsunami was even better and I won't go back there either. When I have to spit out a piece of fish I'm not trusting a place ever again. So Yamato, yet another Asian restaurant in Mount Pleasant that makes an impression but not a good one. 2 stars is averaging the hibachi (3 stars and 1 star for the sushi)

Have had only good experiences here. To me, the Japanese food is the tastiest I've been able to find since moving here from Atl. Also the round after round of sake and plum wine made it fun. We chose to sit over in the sushi area as I'm not a hibachi fan. There are several tables set up over there that can accomidate 4 people each. I'm not a sushi eater so I ordered filet, chicken, shrimp and Lobster-again very good. I'll absolutely continue going back. I also heard something about a Mon-Fri dinner/drink special until like 5-6 pm. May be worth calling to get the details.
